Q: Agree or disagree: The benefits of immigration control outweigh its disadvantages
A：サンプルエッセー(反対)
Nowdays, there seems to be a global trend toward curbing an influx of immigrants. Although some argue that immigration control can prevent potential security threats and lessen finacial burden on the country, I disagree with the idea that the benefits of immigration control outweigh its disadvantages for the following three reasons.
Firstly, immigration control will hinder the innovation growth of the country. Countries with an open-door immigration policy can greatly benefit from global human resources with a creative talent. For example, the founders of innovative American companies like Facebook and Google are immigrants, who have brought prosperity to the country.
Secondly, immigration control will exacerbate social problems caused by demographic changes in developed countries. A declining birthrate and an aging population engender various economic problems such as labour shortages and a decline in tax revenue. Thus an open immigration policy is a socioeconomic imperative for countires with a shrinking working-age population.
Finally, immigrant control will encourage insularism, which can hamper the efforts to achieve world peace. Lack of cultural diversity undermines the development of tolerance for other cultures. This situation will lead to paraochial nationalism, which can increase tensions with other counrties.
In conclusion, for these there reasons, hampering the country’s innovation growth, exacerbating the problems with an aging society, and undermining the efforts to acheive world peace, I strongly believe that the downsides of immigration control outweigh its advantages.
【気になった点】
（１）”immigrants” と”migrants”の違いは？
⇒(i) immigrantは移民・移住者のこと（外国に移住する人を指して、emigrantという表現もあるが、出入国の区別をせずに移民のことを総称的に immigrantとすることが一般的なよう）
(iii) migrantも移民のことを指すが、自国が関係ない文脈で使われる用語。
(例) BBC: “Syrian migrants were arrested in Turkey.”
BBC：シリア出身の（イギリスとは関係ない）移住者がトルコで逮捕された。
（２）hinder と hamperの違いは？
(例) hinder the innovation growth
⇒いずれも、邪魔する・妨げるという意味では共通しており、ほぼ同じ意味で使われる
違いとして、hinderは物事の始まりから邪魔をしてさせないことができるのに対して、hamperは物事の途中において妨害する（最初からhamperは出来ない）というニュアンスの違いあり。
（３）”exacerbate” の類似表現は？exacerbateは、すでに悪い状況にある問題・状況を、さらに悪化させる場合に使う
⇒ worsen, aggravate, compound
